Remote internship of M.Sc. student Sviatoslav Kharuk in bioinformatics group at EMBL (Heidelberg, Germany)

After successful completion of the Biological Data Science Summer School (BDS^3 school), which took place in 2023 in Uzhhorod, our M.Sc. student Sviatoslav Kharuk joined the research group of Dr. Wolfgang Huber at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) (Heidelberg, Germany) for a remote training internship from December 2023 until December 2024.

The aim of the internship is to teach Sviatoslav bioinformatics methods, in particular methods that use the ratio of spliced and unspliced transcripts in a cell, as revealed by single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data, to elucidate the dynamics of gene regulation. The student will apply this method in a project whose overall scientific goal is to investigate the genetic regulation of tissue renewal in the animal colon epithelium. Svyatoslav’s involvement involves working with large and complex datasets, data exploration, quality assessment summarizing and transforming data, and testing alternative analysis approaches.
