Scientists from the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology contributed to the BioCamp in Unizh

Associate Professor of the Department Dmytro Gospodaryov, 2nd year postgraduate student Vladyslav Berezovskyi and 2nd year student Yuliia Tronchuk took part in the biological camp in Unizh. Professor Volodymyr Lushchak and Associate Professor Oleh Lushchak spoke about the directions of scientific work of the Department and its results.

The event was organized by Vladyslav Kirichenko, the founder of the publishing company “Nash Format” and the public organization “Reformation”. The camp was also co-organized by the founders of BioChemHub Bohdan Targovskii and Olha Tarnopolska, teachers of the Kyiv Palace of Children and Youth – Olena Solianyk and Volodymyr Liashenko, technical director of the company “Replicon” Vladyslav Moseiko, research fellow of the Vernadsky Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry Svitlana Chernii and executive director of the PO “Reformation” Anna Bondarchuk.

School participants conducted genetic crosses of fruit flies, identified types of microorganisms in water, soil and air, conducted polymerase chain reaction (PCR), determined the composition of flora and fauna of various ecosystems, learned to identify birds by their songs, purified peroxidase from horseradish root using ion-exchange chromatography and gel filtration.

Dmytro, Vladyslav and Yuliia conducted hands-on sessions on genetic crosses, determination of enzyme activity, isolation of DNA from insects, PCR with subsequent detection of products in gel, electrophoresis of proteins in polyacrylamide gel, and so forth. Other employees of the Department also participated in the preparation of the practice – Andriy Shturmak, Oleh Demianchuk, Maria Lylyk, Marian Ivanochko, Oleksandra Abrat, Volodymyr Shvadchak, and Maria Bayliak.

Laboratory work alternated with active recreation – sports and intellectual games, swimming in the river, watching movies. A separate day was allocated for rafting on the Dniester River on boats and SUP boards.
