A meeting of entrepreneurs and designers with specialists in the fields of biotechnology, biochemistry, and medicine, took place in the Promprilad.Renovation center for innovations. The meeting was organized within the framework of the “Tolocar” project, which, in turn, is financed by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung). The project supports mobile makerspaces – shared workspaces for crafting, prototyping, learning, and research.
Dmytro has long been cultivating kombucha – a symbiotic culture of various species of acetic acid bacteria and yeast, which is the source of the unique material called bacterial cellulose. Cellulose, produced by bacteria, has been used by designers for several decades to make original clothes, shoes and household items. In laboratory conditions, Dmytro obtains small pieces of bacterial cellulose, searching for the most optimal conditions for quick growth of the high-quality material. A laboratory in the makerspace can enable bolder and large-scale experiments with the development of sustainable materials, including bacterial cellulose.
