Congratulations to Oleh Lushchak, Olha Strilbytska and Svitlana Klishch on the publication of a review article “Intermittent fasting and longevity: From animal models to implications for humans” in the highly ranked international journal Ageing Research Reviews (impact factor – 13.1)! The co-authors of the article are also Professor Kenneth B. Storey from Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada) and Aleksander Koliada from the Chebotarev Institute of Gerontology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.
Intermittent fasting is a dietary regimen characterized by periodic cycles of calorie and/or nutrient restriction followed by a period of normal nutrition. The review discusses the beneficial effects of intermittent fasting on metabolism, endocrine and cardiovascular systems, cancer prevention, brain health, neurodegenerative processes, and aging. Experimental data on rodent models and clinical studies are summarized to allow for a clear interpretation of the results and to establish the main mechanisms of intermittent fasting. The main conclusion of the paper is that intermittent fasting can be considered a non-pharmacological strategy for extending life expectancy and reducing the risk of age-related diseases.
