WORK VISIT TO TÜBINGEN UNIVERSITY (TÜBINGEN, GERMANY)

From April 14 to April 21, 2018, Prof. Volodymyr Lushchak, Ph.D. Maria Bailyak and Ph.D. Nadiia Mosiichuk were on a working visit at the Institute of Physiology, the University of Tübingen (Germany). The trip was carried out within the framework of the implementation of the joint Ukrainian-German grant “Cell mechanisms of healthy aging of the brain under caloric restriction”, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. The main purpose of the visit was to discuss and analyze the research results obtained by the Ukrainian and German research teams, as well as the planning of further work. The project leader from Germany, Professor Olga Garaschuk, briefly summarized the results received by her team regarding the effects of caloric restriction on the physiological parameters of the brain of mice of different age groups. From his side, Prof. Volodymyr Lushchak, the project leader from Ukrainian  group, gave a report summarizing the preliminary results on biochemical parameters of the brain and other tissues (blood parameters, energy metabolism and redox status of the brain) in mice of middle and old ages. The prospects for further collaboration were discussed with Professor of Biochemistry Michael Duszenko, whose research interests include the study of parasitic infections of the brain, in particular sleep apnea. In addition, some experimental studies were also conducted on mice of the 6th and 12th month of age during the visit. Mice were kept on ad libitum regime until reaching the respective age in vivarium of the Institute of Physiology. Our colleagues carried out the collection of blood and organs (brain, kidneys, muscles, liver, heart), as well as they optimized the conditions for biochemical analysis and measured certain biochemical parameters in plasma and liver of female mice of different ages.
